Common Misconceptions About Exercise

When people start doing exercise and decide they will stick to an exercise routine, they usually start doing all kinds of things that might keep them from achieving their goals. Whether they read these secrets in magazines or simply hear them from other people, they can be pretty detrimental to their fitness goals. Next time someone tells you another “tip” for great fitness, check it out before incorporating it in your workout routine. Here are some of the common misconceptions people have about fitness in general:

Machines don’t show the right amount of calories – When you start working out you will probably notice that the workout machine you are using shows a certain amount of calories you are burning. However, a lot of fitness trainers advise against this practice because people are very different. For example, a person weighing 200 pounds will definitely burn more calories than someone who weighs 100 pounds. Another difference is given by how much muscles you have: a person who is leaner will burn a lot more calories than a person who doesn’t have a lot of muscular mass. Men will also burn more calories than women. So it depends on many factors that you need to take into consideration when you are working out.

Swimming in not the mother of all exercises – a lot of people believe that swimming is this amazing way to lose weight. It does increase your lung capacity and works great for promoting a lean body, it won’t be the ideal way to exercise if you don’t do it enough. Swimming is a great activity but running or walking will burn a lot more calories because water eases the way you move. If you plan on swimming to lose weight or improve your health condition make sure that you do it properly, that you also do enough cardio and a little strength training along with it, otherwise it is just a fun activity you can do while having the impression that you are losing weight.

The most important thing to know when you start training is to make sure that you are not lying to yourself by doing all the wrong things, especially since some of the ways promoted out there can have a bad influence on your body.
