Overweight and Its Health Risks for Men

Al you have to do is to take a look in the street and you will realize that most men are overweight. Indeed, although it is not regarded as harshly by society as it is when associated with women, obesity with the masculine sex seems to have doubled over two decades and a half. The figures are alarming and so are the health risks brought along by overweight: higher probabilities for developing a heart condition, high blood pressure or a form of cancer. Male obesity also triggers increased chances of prostate and colon cancer incidence. Moreover, over three quarters of type 2 diabetes cases appear with obese persons, especially men.

While perils are high, you should know that the slightest weight loss can noticeably reduce health risks and improve certain conditions. Therefore, even the smallest effort done to lose weight is worthwhile. Here are some tips to help you within this adventure:

  • Before making any decision, prepare yourself mentally. It is not recommended to start overnight. You can bring gradual changes to your lifestyle, making each step whenever you feel comfortable, without pushing too much.
  • As in any other endeavor, it is important to set a goal for yourself. It will motivate you to go on. Every time that you feel like giving up, think about your goal and how much you did till that point.
  • Keeping a diet does not mean starving, but it certainly means eating healthy food. Cut down any commercially packed snacks and fast food products. Go for those dishes that are rich in fiber as they bring you long term energy.
  • Exercise as much as you can, without forcing yourself and increasing the difficulty level gradually in order to allow your body to get accustomed to a more dynamic lifestyle.

Try to avoid stress and anger and, under no circumstances, do not give overeat in such situations. You may think you are allowed to treat yourself with a whole chocolate bar after a long stressful day at work or after a fight with your boss, wife, etc. However, think about your health before you indulge yourself in the sweet pleasure.
